Books of the Month (May, 2025)

Did you know that our Blanche Babcok library has a wonderful selection of books about Native Plants and the Environment? We want to highlight two of these books today.

Using Native Plants to Restore Community in Southwest Michigan and Beyond

by Nancy Cutbirth Small and Tom Small

The following book synopsis is from the Wild Ones website:

Nancy Small spent the last two years of her life writing a book that would include much of Tom’s and her writing throughout their life together as co-founders and leaders of Kalamazoo Area Wild Ones. Tom has revised and updated many of Nancy’s plant lists for Wild Ones members, as well as many of the essays they wrote, separately or together.

The book includes about 150 wonderful illustrations by five local and regional artists and scientific illustrators: Ladislav Hanka, Amelia Hansen, Elizabeth Henderson, and Nancy Stroupe, all from southwest Michigan, and Nancy Halliday, a scientific illustrator from Illinois. The book’s design is by Linda Judy, a professional book designer who retired as the designer for WMU’s Medieval Institute Publications and Cistercian Publications.

Planting: A New Perspective

by Piet Oudolf, Noel Kingsbury

A deep understanding of plants is vital for the success of modern landscape design. Planting shares Oudolf’s substantial knowledge of plant ecology, clarifying how plants respond in various situations, the activities that occur underground, and which species thrive together. Comprehensive plant charts and planting plans will assist you in selecting plants based on their structure, color, and texture. An extensive directory provides information such as each plant’s lifespan, the durability of its seedheads, and its tendency to self-seed.
